Dowd Temple designs and builds heirloom-quality, solid-wood furniture in a broad range of styles. Each piece is custom designed, incorporating a client's preferences, the piece's expected function, and Dowd's unique aesthetic. Temple's work is influenced by styles and designers as diverse as the Queen Anne period, the Shakers, the modernists and the contemporary studio furniture movement.

Temple's work offers a sharp contrast to today's world of disposable products. Each piece is built to last. He employs traditional joinery techniques, ensuring that his furniture can withstand generations of loving — if not always tender – use. Joints are designed with durability in mind, are carefully fitted with hand tools and assembled one at a time. Finishes are used as the piece and its use dictate, from shellac to conversion varnish. The end result is a piece of furniture that is visually appealing, fully functional and guaranteed for the lifetime of the maker.

Almost entirely self-trained, Dowd has been working wood for over 30 years, and hung out his shingle in 1996.  After living and working in Charlotte, NC as well as traveling and working for Southern Architectural Woodworking for many years Dowd opened a medium sized workshop in Salisbury, NC’s historic West Square district, a city steeped in the tradition of historic restoration and antique furniture.  From this shop he both makes furniture, and operates his millwork business.
